Abstract

This study explores the cultural activities of the Pashtun society and examines them through the lens of Islamic teachings, focusing on the need for cultural reform and moderation. Pashtun culture is one of the oldest tribal and value-based social systems in South Asia, deeply rooted in traditions such as Pashtunwali, Jirga, hospitality (Melmastia), marriage customs, and communal rituals. While these practices define social identity and cohesion, they also require critical evaluation in light of Islamic principles. The purpose of this research was to analyze the compatibility between Pashtun cultural practices and Islamic teachings, identify areas of harmony and conflict, and propose a balanced framework for cultural reform. It also aims to emphasize the importance of moderation (Wasatiyyah) in shaping a culturally and religiously aligned society. The methodology used in this study was qualitative in nature, based on secondary sources. Data has been collected from books, academic journals, classical Islamic literature, anthropological studies, and relevant scholarly articles. The analytical approach focuses on comparing cultural norms with Quranic injunctions and Prophetic traditions to evaluate their religious acceptability. The findings reveal that many Pashtuns cultural practices, such as hospitality, collective decision-making through Jirga, respect for elders, and strong family structures, are largely consistent with Islamic ethical values. However, certain practices, including excessive ritualism in weddings, honor-based violence, and limitations on women’s social rights, deviate from Islamic teachings and require reform. The study also finds that modernization, media influence, and globalization have significantly impacted traditional cultural patterns, creating both positive developments and challenges. Pashtun culture is a dynamic and evolving system that cannot be understood in isolation from religion and modern influences. Islam provides a comprehensive framework for cultural guidance that promotes balance, justice, and ethical refinement rather than cultural rejection. The study recommends that cultural practices should be aligned with Islamic principles of moderation, justice, and human dignity. It further suggests reforming traditional systems where necessary, promoting education, protecting women’s rights, reducing un-Islamic rituals, and encouraging awareness through academic and religious institutions to achieve a balanced cultural identity in contemporary society
