Abstract

The Prophetic Sunnah occupies a central position in the interpretation of the Quran and has been recognized by the overwhelming majority of Muslim scholars as an indispensable source of Tafseer. Nevertheless, certain theological groups, particularly the Mutazila and the Khawarij, adopted interpretive approaches that either restricted or questioned the authority of Hadith in explaining Quranic injunctions. This study critically examines the methodological foundations of these approaches and evaluates their arguments in the light of the Quran, authentic Sunnah, the understanding of the Companions, and classical Islamic scholarship. The paper further highlights practical legal implications arising from the rejection or limitation of Hadith, including issues related to legislation, worship, and legal reasoning. It concludes that the explanatory authority of the Prophetic Sunnah is an essential component of Islamic hermeneutics, without which a comprehensive understanding of the Quran remains unattainable.
