Abstract

This article explores the representation of neo-imperial tendencies in contemporary Pakistani television dramas, focusing specifically on the Geo TV drama Uraan. In the postcolonial cultural environment, media narratives often reveal subtle forms of dominance, influence, and ideological control that resemble the structures of neo imperial power. This study examines how social hierarchy, institutional authority, economic pressure, and cultural dominance are portrayed in the drama and how these elements reflect patterns of power associated with neo-imperial discourse.

Using qualitative textual analysis, the article analyzes important scenes, dialogues, and character portrayals in Uraan to understand how the drama presents relationships between power, social mobility, and structural control. The theoretical framework of the study is informed by discussions of neo-imperialism, particularly the perspectives associated with scholars such as Kwame Nkrumah, who argued that modern imperial influence often operates indirectly through political, economic, and cultural systems rather than direct colonial rule.

The study argues that Uraan functions not only as entertainment but also as a cultural text that reflects deeper ideological patterns in which powerful institutions and elite structures shape the lives, aspirations, and opportunities of individuals. By placing the drama within the broader context of Pakistani television narratives, this article highlights how popular media can reproduce neo-imperial patterns of authority while simultaneously shaping public perceptions of power, identity, and social progress. The research therefore contributes to media and cultural studies by demonstrating that television drama provides an important space for examining contemporary manifestations of neo-imperial influence in society.
