The Shariah Status of the Training Curriculum of Tablighi Jamaat: A Research Study in the Context of the Objection of Bid‘ah
Abstract
A frequently raised criticism of the Tablighi Jamaat is that its contemporary methodology of da‘wah characterized by the formulation of six foundational principles (faith, prayer, knowledge and remembrance of Allah, honoring fellow Muslims, sincerity of intention, and da‘wah and tabligh), their presentation in a prescribed sequence, and their adoption as the central framework of its missionary activities lacks explicit precedent in this specific form during the Prophetic era or the period of the righteous early generations (the Companions, the Successors, and their Successors). Critics further contend that the practice of allocating fixed periods for missionary engagement, such as three days, forty days, four months, and one year, organizing collective outreach tours (gasht), emphasizing these programs, and maintaining regular gatherings on Thursday nights and other occasions, constitutes a religious innovation (bid‘ah) and an unwarranted addition to the religion.
This article critically examines this objection through the lens of the Qur’an, the Sunnah, Islamic jurisprudence, established principles of da‘wah, and the perspectives of contemporary Muslim scholars. It seeks to assess whether the criticism is supported by sound religious and scholarly evidence or whether it arises from a misunderstanding of the distinction between immutable religious teachings and administrative, educational, and organizational means employed for their propagation. The study aims to provide a balanced and objective evaluation of the issue and to clarify the legitimacy of such methodologies within the broader framework of Islamic legal and doctrinal principles.
