Abstract

This research paper presents a comprehensive introduction to Imam Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Ṣāliḥī al-Shāmī (d. 942 AH), one of the most distinguished scholars of the ninth and tenth centuries AH, and provides an analytical study of his methodology of Sīrah writing as exemplified in his magnum opus, Subul al-Hudā wa al-Rashād fī Sīrat Khayr al-ʿIbād. Born in the al-Ṣāliḥiyyah district of Damascus, al-Ṣāliḥī studied under eminent Egyptian scholars including Jalāl al-Dīn al-Suyūṭī, Aḥmad al-Qasṭalānī, and Zakariyyā al-Anṣārī. Contemporary scholars such as al-Shaʿrānī, Ibn Ḥajar al-Haytamī, and al-Kattānī praised him as a ḥāfiẓ, muḥaddith, and an exemplar of piety and scholarship. The study analyzes al-Ṣāliḥī's distinctive methodological approach in Subul al-Hudā, which synthesizes material from approximately 300 sources across multiple disciplines including ḥadīth, tafsīr, fiqh, history, geography, linguistics, and Sufism. His method is characterized by systematic compilation of excerpts with critical commentary, explanation of rare terms, reconciliation of seemingly contradictory reports, extensive use of poetry, Qur'anic exegesis, and fiqhī rulings related to the Sīrah. The research highlights his engagement with theological debates, particularly on Ashʿarī doctrines, his incorporation of observational and transmitted reports including miracles and karāmāt, and his rigorous critique of narrators. The paper concludes that Subul al-Hudā became a foundational reference for later Sīrah writers due to its encyclopedic scope, integration of diverse disciplines, and balance between transmission and critical analysis, offering a model for integrating ḥadīth criticism, fiqh, kalām, and literary sources in Prophetic biography.
