Abstract

This study explores the concept of gender interaction (Ikhtilat) in Islam, clarifying common misconceptions that Islam entirely prohibits interaction between men and women. Drawing on the Qur’an, Hadith, and the practices of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions, the research highlights a balanced Islamic perspective based on modesty, morality, and necessity. While Islam strictly forbids seclusion (khalwa) between non-mahrams, it allows purposeful, respectful interaction in public or professional settings, such as education, healthcare, and social services. The study presents examples from the Prophet’s life where women participated in religious, social, and even military affairs without compromising Islamic values. The findings emphasize that Islam promotes a moderate approach  neither complete segregation nor unrestricted mixing  but one rooted in dignity, respect, and social responsibility. This thesis encourages a contextual understanding of Islamic guidelines, countering rigid interpretations and supporting ethical gender dynamics in contemporary Muslim societies.
