Abstract

The Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ holds a central place in the Islamic intellectual tradition, as the practical understanding of the Qur’an and the objectives of Islamic law cannot be fully grasped without studying the Prophetic biography. Among the important aspects of the Seerah are the Prophet’s military expeditions (Ghazawāt) and detachments (Sarāyā), through which his leadership, strategic wisdom, ethical conduct, and legal guidance are clearly reflected. For this reason, early scholars of Hadith, Fiqh, and Seerah devoted considerable attention to preserving and transmitting their accounts.

A key issue in the study of these expeditions concerns the nature of their sources and the methodologies used in their transmission. Hadith scholars emphasize the authenticity of chains of narration and the reliability of narrators, while Seerah scholars focus more on narrative coherence, chronology, and historical context. This methodological difference often leads to variations in the number, dates, and details of expeditions, which are sometimes misunderstood as contradictions, though they largely stem from differences in scholarly approach.

This study examines the linguistic and technical meanings of terms such as Ghazwah, Sariyyah, Siyar, Maghāzī, and Jihād, and explores the methodological relationship between Hadith and Seerah studies. It also highlights the scholarly value of the Ghazawāt and Sarāyā narratives in understanding Islamic principles of warfare, leadership, and ethics, while addressing misconceptions regarding the reliability of Maghāzī literature.
