Abstract

This article explores the intricate relationship between religion and politics in Islamic civilization, spanning from the establishment of the Caliphate to the advent of modern nation-states. It analyzes the evolution of political systems under Islamic governance, including the role of religious authority in governance and the transitions from religiously-led states to secular nation-states. The article also reflects on the impact of colonialism, the reform movements of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the shaping of modern Islamic political thought. Key political structures, such as the Caliphate, Sultanates, and contemporary Islamic states, are discussed in the context of Islamic theological principles.
