Abstract

This study examines the use of the principle of Sadd al-Dharā’iʿ (blocking the means) in the interpretation of the Qur’an, with particular reference to the arguments presented in Tafsir Taysir al-Qur’an. Sadd al-Dharā’iʿ is an important principle in Islamic jurisprudence that aims to prevent actions or means that may lead to unlawful or harmful outcomes. The research analyzes how the exegete applies this principle while explaining various Qur’anic verses and how it contributes to understanding the wisdom and objectives of Islamic rulings. The study finds that the principle of Sadd al-Dharā’iʿ is employed in the tafsir to highlight the preventive nature of Islamic law, especially in matters related to social ethics, moral conduct, and the avoidance of corruption and harm. Through this approach, the interpreter not only explains the explicit prohibitions in the Qur’an but also emphasizes the importance of closing the pathways that may lead to sinful or harmful actions. The research further indicates that the application of this principle in Tafsir Taysir al-Qur’an reflects a balanced methodology that aligns with the broader objectives of Shariah. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the relationship between the principles of Islamic jurisprudence and Qur’anic exegesis, and it highlights the significance of Sadd al-Dharā’iʿ as a methodological tool in interpreting Qur’anic guidance in both classical and contemporary contexts.
