Abstract

This paper will analyse the psychological growth of Lenny, the young lead character in Bapsi Sidhwa's Ice Candy Man, who is traumatised by the partition of India in 1947. Exploring the experience of Lenny as she goes through life as a naive and as an educated person, the dissertation pays attention to how the exposure to mass violence, grief and division of the community affects the perception of community by Lenny as an individual, as well as her identity and morality. Applying a qualitative approach — more specifically, the content analysis of the novel — the study attempts to track Lenny's psychological evolution. The research is a qualitative content analysis that will identify themes and key passages in Ice Candy Man by Paul Scott to show that Lenny has a psychological problem. It is psychoanalytically unzipped in accordance with Lacanian vision, in line with Lenny's metamorphosis of identity and vision. It has also been discovered that exposure to violence in the partition caused psychological development in Lenny. She dreams at night, she shuns emotional contact, she is more conscious of the nuances of force, sex and deceit. Only at this point do we witness her metamorphosis as she crosses the boundary between innocence and an adult world where identity and human relationships are weak. The paper recommends applying evidence-based trauma-informed interventions in conflict situations, such as offering emotional support, promoting resilience, and creating safe spaces for children. In addition, the research shows how literary analysis and psychological theory can be applied simultaneously to comprehend the long-term effects of violence on children's lives.
